Do you know, in the United States, everything we eat except for meat, poultry, and some egg products, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Food and Drug Safety Program regulates food, drug and cosmetic safety and provides information to consumers and the regulated industry.

The U.S. government must approve any drug - whether it's prescription or over-the-counter - before it can be sold. The FDA evaluates the safety of a drug by looking at side effects, how it's manufactured, results of animal testing and clinical trials, and more. Also a drug's safety will be monitored after approval.

To make sure you use drugs safely

  • Make sure that you understand and follow the instructions on taking the drug
  • Don't share medicines
  • Let your health care provider know about all other drugs, supplements and herbs you are taking

To make sure your food safty

  • Be sure that your refrigerator and freezer are the right temperature for storing food
  • Refrigerate or freeze perishable foods right away
  • Throw away anything that looks or smells suspicious. If you think a food might be bad, don't taste it!
  • Wash your hands well before preparing food
  • Keep your work area, wash rags and utensils clean
  • Cook meats thoroughly
